As a prerequisite for this idea, checkout 2ce.com. And think about the scene in Minority Report where he's digging through the case files and his interface is this gigantic screen and his commands are based on hand movements.

It seems that we've been using this interface of monitor+keyboard+mouse for a very long time now. And all GUI's are designed based on this old, uncomfortable, and possibly deficient interface. Isn't it about time that a whole new interface be designed from ground up? Within a few years, virtual screens projected on eye goggles will probably be pretty cheap and have very high resolutions. Or, maybe flat panel technology will jump leaps and bounds and we can have 60 inch screens for our computers. The mouse+keyboard system will surely seem very inadequate for such a technology. The idea is to come up with something more 3-D in nature. The mouse is very 2-D. Think in terms of utilizing BOTH hands to do mouse-type operations. You hardly ever use the mouse and keyboard simultaneously. So why not attach some gyroscopic sleaves on your fingers which are automatically active when the keyboard is NOT in use (the details of this system have not been worked out but it should be fairly trivial to switch between mouse and keyboard modes)?
Look at the 2ce site and you'll understand how this could come in handy!

Obviously, along with the hardware for this new interface should come a new GUI. Something that can take advantage of the human brains multithreading abilities.

[ravi] There are white boards available that let you capture the "writings" onto your computer. Of course people have to walk up to it to make notes! The only deal is it goes one way, from board to computer, not two way :-(

OK.. this isn't the answer to the mainstream use of cybiko, but it made me think of something similar. If you had a bunch of bluetooth enabled laptops [or wifi for that matter], say in a conference room. They should be all capable of talking to each other, right? So, what about some kind of digital dry-erase board that can be shared by everyone in the room? That way, at the end of the meeting, everyone already has a digital copy of the notes made. Everyone's doodlings could automatically be transmitted to a projector, for display. It needs some thought on how to allocate "board" space to each user. I see it being useful for people who do any schematic or drawing based group discussions.

The problem with cybiko is that it's peer-to-peer. That takes profile stuff out of the picture, and also removes multi-tier applications, which is really where the money is. The issue is to create a service that is almost necessary* in the IT/business environment, but that can be adapted to the average consumer. The money comes from the business side. The application growth is on the consumer side.
But cybiko is definitely one of the coolest devices out there without question, and virtually without par!

Wow! The cybikoextreme thing is really frikkin cooL! I particularly like the feature that lets your device act as an internet gateway for any other nearby devices. If something like that became mainstream, we'd have some damn good wireless internet coverage! Imagine if you could turn every cellphone and pda into an automatic wireless gateway and just keep piggybacking until you hit the first backbone. It probably wouldn' t give you very good bandwidth, but that would vary depending on you proximity to the backbone. The telecom companies need to collaborate their skills and work on this for the greater good rather than squabble with each other at every opportunity! Sundar! You have influence.. make it happen dammit!! ;)

Hasn't this already been done in Japan? I guess the question is whether it will take off here? Either that or something that uses the same concept but provides a different service. Its definitely a great idea and probably has lots of potential. It might take off in a place like NewYork or San Fran where people spend a lot of time on their feet amongst crowds. Maybe even Chicago for that matter. Maybe some sort of collaboration with springstreet or lavalife would do the trick.
I've heard of people talking about proximity advertising... you could be driving by the neighborhood shopping mall and get sale notices and coupons on your cellphone. It never took off I think because it has the potential to get out of hand and become like SPAM. Plus, the billing system would get complicated.

Proximity based date management system. This is a wireless app where information about the location of the device is retrieved from the network and matched against user profile. So, for instance you could be at your local watering hole and you notice a chick with nipple piercings, and that's part of your profile. And she's got dumass on her cell profile. The two cells both register against a back-end server which correlates that both people are within range, and sends out SMS/page messages indicating that a potential match is nearby.
Seems like the dating engines are getting a lot of hits, and money. Check out springstreetnetworks.com, lavalife.com. Maybe a mobile agent for them is what's missing? How hard would this be to develop is the big question.
